We all deserve a safe, stable place to live. But we are not protecting this basic human need for people in Britain experiencing the worst forms of homelessness.
Today there are almost
households experiencing homelessness across Great Britain.
If we carry on as we currently are, this is expected to almost double in the next 25 years.
This is completely unacceptable. Homelessness ruins lives in many ways, affecting health and wellbeing, family relationships, and employment. For some it is a death sentence. However, whilst homelessness is devastating, it is not inevitable. In most cases homelessness is preventable. We also know that in every case it can be ended permanently.
The commonly accepted definition of homelessness means not having a home. You are homeless if you have nowhere to stay and are living on the streets, but you can be homeless even if you have a roof over your head (for example: staying with friends or family, squatting, at risk of violence or abuse in your home, living in poor conditions that affect your health). Rough sleeping is the most dangerous form of homelessness. We should not accept anybody sleeping on the streets.
This includes more than
people sleeping rough on any given night, and
living in emergency accommodation like hostels, refuges and night shelters. Thousands are also stuck in temporary accommodation for months or even years.
The Hirsche Foundation was established in 2018 with the principle objective of relieving the poverty of the homeless within West Yorkshire.
We have a strong desire to help those around us who find themselves in a state of homelessness and need a helping hand to resume a normal life and take an active role in their futures.
We can’t do this alone. We are just a small piece in the puzzle but firmly believe that by working together with other charitable organisations, support agencies and local authorities, we can make a significant difference. Only through a joined-up approach can we relieve the poverty associated with homelessness and ultimately look to ending homelessness in our region.
If you know of any projects that we could get involved in or if you would like to partner with us in future projects, then please contact us.
Let’s change lives together.
